Top Beaches Near Udupi & Mangalore

Udupi's beaches get most of the attention, but Mangalore has its own coastline worth a dedicated trip — from Panambur's water sports and kite festival to the quiet rock formations at Someshwara. Here's both sides of the coast, in one place.

Mangalore

Best Beaches in Mangalore

1. Panambur Beach

Water Sports & Sunsets
Panambur Beach photo

Mangalore's best-known beach, about 11–13 km from the city centre and roughly 11 km from Mangalore International Airport. It's consistently rated among the cleanest beaches in India, with lifeguards, jet skis, parasailing, ATV rides, banana boat rides, and even camel and horse rides along the sand. Every two years it hosts an international kite festival that draws crowds from across the state. Open 8 AM to 7 PM for day visitors; overnight beach cottages get 24-hour access.

2. Tannirbhavi Beach

Quiet & Green
Tannirbhavi Beach photo

The second-most-visited beach in Mangalore, and a genuinely different experience from Panambur — it has a tree park right at the beach, which is unusual for this coast. You can reach it by road via Kuloor Bridge, or take a short ferry ride across the Gurupur River from Sultan Battery, which is worth doing at least once just for the crossing. Quieter, greener, and a good pick for sunrise.

3. Someshwara Beach

Rock Formations & History
Someshwara Beach photo

A rocky beach in Ullal known for large boulder formations locally called "Rudra Shile," and for the ancient Someshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, said to have been built during the reign of the warrior queen Abbakka Devi, who fought the Portuguese in the 16th century. Currents here can be strong, so it's better for sitting on the rocks watching the sunset than swimming.

4. Ullal Beach

Casuarina Groves

Right next to Someshwara Beach, with casuarina trees lining the shore and the ruins of Ullal Fort nearby. It's a water sports spot in its own right and tends to be less commercialised than Panambur, with a more local, everyday-beach feel.

5. Sasihithlu Beach

River Confluence

About 25 km from Mangalore, where the Nandini and Shambhavi rivers meet the Arabian Sea. Clean, white sand, and noticeably less crowded than the beaches closer to the city — a good pick if Panambur's crowds aren't what you're after.

6. NITK Beach, Surathkal

Lighthouse

Located in Surathkal near the NITK campus, with a lighthouse close to the shore. A frequent stop for anyone already heading north out of Mangalore towards Udupi.

Udupi

Best Beaches Near Udupi

We've covered Udupi's beaches in more detail in our Best Tourist Places in Udupi guide — here's the shortlist:

Malpe Beach
The most popular beach in Udupi, about 6–8 km from town, known for its golden sand and as the boat-launch point for St. Mary's Island.
St. Mary's Island
A short boat ride from Malpe, known for its unusual hexagonal basalt rock formations and quieter, less commercial shoreline.
Kaup Beach & Lighthouse
A 100+ year old lighthouse with around 150 steps to the top — the sunset view from up there is one of the best on this stretch of coast.
Padubidri Beach
A Blue Flag–certified beach with lifeguards and proper facilities, right in the town our office is based in.
Maravanthe Beach
The Arabian Sea on one side, the Souparnika River on the other, with NH66 running in between — genuinely one of the most photographed drives in Karnataka.

FAQ

Beach Trip Questions, Answered

Which is the best beach near Mangalore? +
Panambur Beach is the most popular and best-equipped, with lifeguards, water sports and food stalls. For a quieter alternative, Tannirbhavi or Sasihithlu are better picks.
Is it safe to swim at Someshwara or Ullal Beach? +
Someshwara Beach has strong currents and is better suited to sitting on the rocks and watching the sunset than swimming. Ullal is generally calmer, but always check local signage and lifeguard advice on the day.
How far is Panambur Beach from Mangalore Airport? +
About 11 km — it's a common stop for visitors with a few hours to kill before or after a flight.
Can you cover both Mangalore and Udupi beaches in one day? +
It's a long day but doable if you pick 2–3 beaches on each side rather than trying to see everything. Most of our customers split it into a Mangalore-beaches day and a separate Udupi-beaches day.
Do you provide a taxi for a beach-hopping day trip? +
Yes — this is one of our most common local rental bookings. See our local rental packages for hourly and full-day options.
