Agumbe, Sringeri & Kudremukha: A Western Ghats Day Trip from Udupi
Beyond Udupi's beaches and temples, the Western Ghats start rising inland within an hour or two's drive — and this cluster of three destinations is where most of our outstation customers head when they want rainforest, a major pilgrimage site, and a proper trek, all in roughly the same direction.
Agumbe
Sunset Point & Rainforest
Agumbe sits about 60 km from Udupi and around 45 km from Manipal, perched at roughly 830 metres in the Western Ghats — close enough for a half-day trip, remote enough to feel like a different world. It's genuinely nicknamed "the Cherrapunji of South India" for recording the highest rainfall in Karnataka, and it's where the classic Doordarshan series Malgudi Days was filmed, which still draws a steady trickle of curious visitors. The drive up is part of the experience — around 18 hairpin bends through the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, best enjoyed outside peak monsoon unless you specifically want to see the rainforest at its most dramatic. The sunset point looks out toward the Arabian Sea on a clear evening, and nearby waterfalls — Barkana Falls, Onake Abbi Falls and Kudlu Theertha Falls — are worth building into the day if you have time for a short trek.
Sringeri
Pilgrimage & Temple Town
Sringeri is home to one of the four cardinal mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, making it one of the most significant pilgrimage stops in this part of the Western Ghats. The temple complex sits on the banks of the Tunga river, and it's common to see large fish gathering near the ghats where pilgrims feed them. Most visitors reach Sringeri either via the Agumbe ghat road or the alternate NH13 route through Karkala — the Agumbe route is more scenic (and the more popular choice), while NH13 is generally faster and better surfaced.
Kudremukha
Trekking
Kudremukha ("horse-face", named for the shape of its peak) is around 111 km from Udupi, roughly a 2.5-hour drive. It's the trekking destination in this cluster — rolling grassland peaks, dense shola forest and the Kudremukha National Park, which is also a source of the Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi rivers. Trekking permits are managed by the forest department and availability can vary seasonally, so it's worth confirming ahead if a summit trek is the main goal rather than just the drive-up viewpoints.
Agumbe and Sringeri sit on the same ghat road, so they're naturally paired into one trip. Kudremukha is close by but trek-focused, so it's often planned as its own day if summiting is the goal rather than just driving up to a viewpoint. If you're already covering Kollur and Kodachadri on an outstation booking, this cluster fits naturally into the same multi-day loop.
